NORWOOD – Norwood native and SCS graduate, Noah Hanifin has reached the pinnacle of the sporting world. In a heart-stopping final at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Team USA, including defenseman Noah Hanifin, defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to secure the Olympic Gold Medal.

For those who remember Noah as the young standout at Saint Catherine of Siena and later at St. Sebastian’s, this victory feels like the culmination of a journey the entire town has followed. Before he was a top-five NHL draft pick or a star for the Vegas Golden Knights, he was a Norwood kid with a dream. Today, that dream is cast in 24-karat gold.

The victory comes exactly 46 years to the day after the 1980 “Miracle on Ice.” While the 2026 squad featured a roster of seasoned NHL professionals, the tension was no less palpable. Team USA struck first just six minutes into the game, but Canada leveled the score in the second period, leading to a white-knuckle defensive battle.

Hanifin, known for his steady presence on the blue line, skated in all six games of the tournament. His performance in the final was a masterclass in defensive composure, helping neutralize a Canadian offense stacked with elite talent. The game was finally decided in overtime when Jack Hughes found the back of the net, sparking a celebration that was heard from Milan all the way back to Nahatan St.

Today the “magic” belongs to the kid from Norwood who stayed true to his roots while conquering the world stage. -RD
