A multi-vehicle crash in Norwood on Wednesday morning resulted in the death of one man and the hospitalization of another; and forcing the closure of Route 1 for several hours.
Norwood first responders were called to the busy section of Providence Highway (near Prendergast Circle) to find two heavily damaged vehicles. According to officials, a 29-year-old man was killed and a 47-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital with injuries that are reported to be non-life-threatening. The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office identified the deceased driver as Henry Oberlander, 29, a resident of Norwood.
The severity of the incident detoured Providence Highway traffic in both directions for several hours. Ironically, local residents told Inside Norwood they observed a marked Norwood Police cruiser at that very location during today’s morning commute.
The crash caused extensive delays while police processed the scene and cleared the debris from the road that was not fully reopened until noon.
The crash remains under investigation by the Norwood Police Department and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office. We will continue to monitor the story for any further updates. -RD
