NORWOOD – A Tuesday afternoon at a local convenience store last month took a chaotic turn when a group of juveniles engaged in a physical altercation, drawing a significant police response to South Norwood.

On April 7, at approximately 3:34 PM, Norwood Police received a telephone report regarding a disturbance at the Convenient Food Mart located at 1237 Washington Street. According to the police log, the caller reported between six and ten youths were involved in a physical fight on the premises.

While the initial report indicated the brawl was physical, callers noted that no weapons were visible during the incident. Norwood Police dispatched multiple units to the scene. The officers arrived on the scene quickly, coordinated by Dispatcher William J. Tkaczuk, to de-escalate the situation and disperse the crowd.

Though the scene was cleared, the department’s work is far from over. The reporting officer noted that a formal report is being filed (Incident: 26NWD-288-OF), and police plan to conduct extensive follow-ups.

“Will be returning in an attempt to speak to other juvenile parents involved. Will also be following up with the middle school and the SRO (School Resource Officer) of the middle school” the narrative states.

The heavy involvement of the Middle School SRO suggests that the individuals involved may be students within the Norwood Public School system. At this time, no arrests have been announced, and the names of the juveniles (as well as the report) are being withheld due to their age. -RD
