NORWOOD – Police are seeking information after a pedestrian was struck by a black SUV in an alleged hit-and-run incident at the intersection of Nichols St and Nahatan St.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:25 p.m. on October 23, when Norwood Police responded to the scene after a neighbor called and reported a black SUV struck a pedestrian and fled toward Norwood Center.

According to the police report, the caller stated the vehicle was being operated by a bald, white male who had already left the scene before responders arrived.

Police say the pedestrian was in the crosswalk Nahatan St when he was allegedly struck by the SUV, after stopping at the Nichols St stop sign. The victim told police that after the accident the operator had exited the vehicle to render aid. Strangely, the driver identified himself as “former law enforcement.” After checking on the victim, the driver returned to his car and left the area.

Despite being knocked to the ground, the victim declined medical treatment, reporting only minor discomfort in his left thumb. He also declined an offer for a ride home by police officers and chose to continue his walk.

The police investigation, which included checking traffic camera footage at the nearby intersection of Nahatan St and Washington St, yielded no immediate leads. Due to the lack of investigatory information, the case is currently being closed, pending any new evidence or tips from the public.

Norwood Police Chief, Christopher Padden told Inside Norwood he would like to identify the driver. Based upon the victim’s account of the incident, police consider the vehicle operator to be at fault for the accident.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information regarding a bald white male driving a black SUV on Nahatan St around 2:25 p.m. on October 23 to contact the police department. -RD
