NORWOOD – The boots were muddy, the weather was biting, but the spirit of community prevailed this week as the Norwood Trails Committee unveiled a significant upgrade to the town’s open space network: a 47-foot footbridge that connects the Vanderbilt and Pine Tree Forest Trail system.
According to Chris Paddock, the newly appointed Chair of the Norwood Trails Committee, the installation was a massive undertaking. Paddock announced that more than 25 volunteers “braved mud, cold weather, and more mud” to haul materials and assemble the structure across a difficult drainage trench.
The result of this hard work is an accessible, “mostly” dry 2-mile loop trail through some of Norwood’s most scenic upland terrain.
The new crossing does more than just keep hikers’ feet dry; it serves as a critical link in the town-wide Tiot Trail.
The bridge connects Pezwick Park on Sumner Street with the Pine Tree Forest (PTF) and Vanderbilt area. For local history buffs, this area offers a unique walk through time, as the trail runs along the Neponset River through the former site of the legendary Norwood Arena.
With the trench now spanned, the area opens up significant recreational opportunities for residents including the Main Loop: A 2-mile scenic route through the uplands; and the 5K Route: A longer option that incorporates side trails running along Purgatory Brook, ideal for runners and avid hikers.
The Trails Committee is wasting no time in inaugurating the new route. Paddock confirmed that this newly connected loop will serve as the official route for the Trails Committee’s First Day Hike on January 1, 2026.
This annual tradition invites residents to ring in the New Year with fresh air and community spirit, and next year’s event promises to be smoother than ever thanks to the new infrastructure.
The completion of the bridge highlights the reliance of the Trails Committee on dedicated residents.
“We’re so excited to offer this open space access route,” Paddock stated in a social media post to the community. “Thank you Norwood for your support, and thank you to our volunteers. Let’s keep this moving forward!”
