NORWOOD – A routine traffic enforcement effort turned into a high-speed chase through the streets of Norwood early Sunday morning, resulting in the arrest of a Middleboro man on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
At approximately 3:27 AM on May 3, officers attempted to conduct a stop after clocking a vehicle traveling at a staggering 113 mph near the intersection of Route 1 and Dean Street.
According to the Norwood Police, the driver, allegedly identified as James Peter Sears, 37, refused to pull over for pursuing officers. Police say the chase continued on Dean st before entering the Staples parking lot at 991 Providence Highway. The car allegedly went back onto Providence Highway at a speed estimated by officers to be in excess of 70 mph.
The severity of the incident required a significant response. Six patrol units converged on the scene to assist to locate, stop and subsequently arrest the subject. The driver is allegedly a resident of Middleboro, Massachusetts and was taken into custody once the vehicle was stopped.
According to police, Sears is facing a litany of charges including failure to stop for police; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; possession of a class C substance; speeding; marked lanes violation, and failure to stop/yield to a traffic signal. He was processed under arrest report 26NWD-143-AR and presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Because the matter remains under investigation, Norwood Police Department will not release the full text of the incident report at this time. -RD
