NORWOOD – As the final weekend of May approaches, the Town of Norwood is preparing to uphold its long-standing tradition of remembrance. Veteran Service Officer Derek Wennerstrand, invites the community this Memorial Day weekend to gather in a collective “thank you” to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States.
From the quiet act of decorating graves to the spirited energy of the town parade, the weekend offers several opportunities for residents to reflect on the cost of freedom and celebrate the legacy of local heroes.
The weekend’s observances begin with a focus on individual tribute and public recognition.
- 8:00 AM – Honoring the Silent Cities: Volunteers will gather at Highland Cemetery to decorate the graves of our fallen veterans. This hands-on tradition ensures that every service member interred in Norwood is recognized with a fresh flag.
- 10:00 AM – Banner Unveiling: The focus shifts to DAV Memorial Park for a formal Banner Unveiling Event. This ceremony is designed to honor local veterans and their families specifically. Attendees can expect a special presentation and insights from a guest speaker, highlighting the personal stories behind the uniforms.
Memorial Day itself will be marked by several solemn ceremonies and the town’s signature parade which is the cornerstone of Norwood’s community spirit, will wind through the heart of town, culminating in a final, poignant ceremony at Highland Cemetery.
