DEDHAM – The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office has launched an aggressive recruitment campaign aimed at filling seats for its next Correctional Officer Recruit Academy, which is scheduled to commence in September. Department officials announced that testing is currently underway, with multiple evaluation dates opening up throughout the month of June for prospective candidates ready to take the mandatory written and physical fitness exams.

Faced with the ongoing staffing challenges that have impacted law enforcement and correctional agencies nationwide, the Sheriff’s Office is pitching the academy as a gateway to a stable, long-term public safety career.

To attract a competitive pool of applicants, the department is highlighting a starting salary range for new correctional officers of $72,622 to $87,445, supplemented by an array of state benefits designed to incentivize recruitment and retention.

The path from applicant to badge requires meeting several baseline qualifications and passing a multi-tiered screening process. According to the recruitment criteria, candidates must prove their physical and mental readiness by successfully navigating a written test, a physical fitness evaluation, a comprehensive background check, and both drug and psychological screenings.

For those who successfully navigate the testing gauntlet, the department offers a compensation package backed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts including entry into the Massachusetts State Retirement Plan as well as comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance options. The benefits package also features a sick leave incentive program and tuition remission, a benefit often highly valued by personnel looking to advance their formal education while working in the field.

With June testing dates quickly approaching, local recruitment officials are urging interested Norwood residents not to miss what they style as an opportunity to launch a stable career in law enforcement.
