NORWOOD – Local outdoor enthusiasts will soon find navigating the town’s trail networks a bit easier. The Town of Norwood has successfully secured additional state funding to establish a comprehensive, town-wide wayfinding system for its trail network.
According to an official notification letter from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) dated May 22, 2026, the application for the Norwood Trail Wayfinding project has successfully passed its initial review phase. The project, spearheaded by the Norwood Conservation Commission, the Trails Committee, and the Community Development team, has been recommended by the Governor’s Office to receive a grant in the amount of $22,103 under the 2026 MassTrails Grant Program.
The funding is being allocated through the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP). Amanda Lewis, the MassTrails Program Manager, noted in the correspondence that the recommended projects are currently undergoing final routine compliance reviews with the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act. These federal reviews are conducted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in partnership with the DCR.
Once the final approvals are secured and contract paperwork is completed, the town will have approximately 24 months to complete the installation of the new wayfinding and signage components.
The upcoming system is expected to significantly improve local connectivity, providing clearer directions, mileage markings, and navigational aids to ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy Norwood’s open spaces. -RD
