NORWOOD – Local commuters will need to rethink their morning drive this week.

Just before 7:30am this morning, town officials announced a temporary closure of a major artery on social media beginning Monday July 13; shutting down a busy stretch of Washington Street for critical infrastructure updates.

According to a traffic advisory issued by the Town of Norwood, the Washington Street Bridge spanning Hawes Brook will be completely closed to all through traffic starting today, Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17, 2026.

The five-day closure is required so crew members can safely execute a rehabilitation project on the bridge structure.

While the closure is bound to add some friction to the daily commute, the town has established a formal detour route to help drivers navigate around the work zone. Motorists traveling through the area are being directed to use a detour loop via Short Street, Morse Street, Pleasant Street, and Dean Street.

Local officials are urging drivers to plan ahead, map out their routes, and allow for extra travel time as traffic adjusts to the temporary detour.

“We appreciate your patience as these improvements are completed safely,” the town shared in a statement to residents.

The bridge is expected to reopen to normal traffic patterns by the upcoming weekend, assuming the rehabilitation work proceeds on schedule. -RD
