NORWOOD – Local emergency crews responded swiftly to Westover Parkway late Thursday afternoon following reports of a structure fire that quickly spread to a home’s roofline.
Dispatch records from the Norwood Police Department indicate that a 911 call came in shortly after 5:00 p.m. on August 13, 2026 warning of a potential house fire.
Police units arriving quickly confirmed the situation was active, reporting visible flames and requesting that the Norwood Fire Department “step it up.”
According to Norwood Police radio, the fire appeared to originate from an outdoor grill behind the home before jumping to the roof of the structure. While the resident managed to safely evacuate and attempted to extinguish the primary flames using a garden hose before crews arrived, responders noted that the fire had already crept beneath the home’s shingles.
“It looks like under the shingles is (sic) on fire still,” officers on scene reported, noting that while the bulk of the initial grill fire had been knocked down, smoldering heat and active flames had compromised a portion of the roof.
Norwood Firefighters were able to address the hidden flames beneath the roofing materials to prevent the fire from spreading further into the living quarters.
No injuries were reported, and the resident remained safely outside as crews contained the situation. At the time of this article, the exact extent of damage remains unclear.
This incident serves as a good reminder to keep open flames at a safe distance from your home to prevent devastating structure fires. In fact, under the Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code (527 CMR 1.00, promulgated pursuant to M.G.L. c. 148), outdoor grills must be operated at least 10 feet away from the side of any building or structure.
Additionally, state safety regulations strictly prohibit using gas or charcoal grills on covered porches, balconies, decks with roof overhangs, or fire escapes.
