NORWOOD – A harrowing morning commute unfolded on Interstate 95 North today as first responders from multiple surrounding towns battled against time to free entrapped victims following a severe multi-vehicle collision near the Norwood-Canton town line.
Crews arrived on scene August 16, 2026 and according to initial reports, at least one individual was ejected from a vehicle during the impact, while another remained entrapped inside the wreckage.
Due to the nature of the injuries involved, emergency personnel quickly escalated the response, calling in specialized medical transport and regional mutual aid including Boston MedFlight.
Once firefighters successfully freed the trapped victim, Norwood Ambulance 5 rushed the critically injured patient to the airport to meet the MedFlight helicopter for rapid air transport to a major trauma center.
Simultaneously, a second critically injured patient was rushed directly to a Boston hospital via Canton Paramedics who also responded. A third patient was treated and transported to a local trauma center by Sharon Paramedics.
The scope of the incident required significant coordination, leading officials to call in off-duty Norwood firefighters to backfill fire stations and maintain emergency coverage for the rest of the town while primary crews remained tied up on the highway.
Norwood Fire Department praised the seamless collaboration required to manage the scene in a Facebook post this afternoon. They cited crucial efforts from the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center, Canton and Sharon Firefighters, Boston MedFlight, and the Massachusetts State Police.
As of late this morning, emergency crews remained on scene conducting investigation and cleanup operations along I-95 North. Drivers are strongly urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes, as significant traffic delays are expected to persist.
