NORWOOD – A local building has been shuttered pending a safety evaluation after a vehicle struck the storefront early this morning, according to the Norwood Fire Department.
Emergency crews, including Engine 6, Ambulance 5, and Command Unit C2, were dispatched to the scene on May 15, 2026 following reports of a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a vehicle had jumped the curb and slammed into the front of the building, causing what officials described as “moderate structural damage.”
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, fire officials confirmed there were no injuries reported at the scene.
Due to the nature of the impact, the Town Building Inspector was notified to evaluate the structural integrity of the property. Following a preliminary assessment, the inspector elected to shut the building down and ordered it to remain closed until a more comprehensive evaluation can be completed.
Norwood fire crews remained on the scene for several hours, assisting with the evacuation of the building’s occupants and securing the site. Firefighters worked to mitigate any secondary hazards, ensuring the area was safe for pedestrians and nearby traffic before clearing the scene.
In a statement following the incident, the Norwood Fire Department highlighted the evolving role of first responders in the community.
“Incidents like this are a reminder that today’s fire service is truly an all-hazards response agency,” the department said. “From fires and medical emergencies to motor vehicle accidents, hazardous conditions, and structural concerns, Norwood firefighters work alongside other town departments every day to help keep the community safe.”
The identity of the driver has not been released. The cause of the crash is unclear, however Norwood Police said in a statement there were no criminal charges related to the incident.
It is unclear when the building will be cleared to reopen for public use. -RD
