NORWOOD – An overnight traffic stop quickly escalated into a high-speed pursuit early Monday morning after a driver fled from police at speeds reaching 92 mph, according to Norwood Police Department call log.
The incident began at 2:30 a.m. on Monday, May 18, when officers attempted a motor vehicle stop at Nucar Chevrolet-Hyundai on the Boston-Providence Highway.
According to the police log, the vehicle, reported to be a Jeep Grand Cherokee allegedly bearing Massachusetts registration K970, refused to pull over.
Police say the Jeep reached speeds of 92 mph as it fled north on Route 1 near Carnegie Row. The driver then made a sharp right turn onto Dean Street, maintaining a speed of 68 mph through the intersection.
The pursuit continued as the suspect turned right onto Neponset Street, heading toward the Canton town line at allegedly 65 mph. Due to the increasing safety risks of the high-speed chase, Norwood Police supervisor officially ordered the pursuit to be canceled.
Shortly after the chase was called off, units conducted a check of the Nucar dealership property to ensure no damage or related criminal activity had occurred. Officers reported that everything appeared to be in order before clearing the scene, police say.
Norwood Police have filed an official incident report under case number 26NWD-457-OF and the investigation appears to be ongoing.
Because the matter is subject to an active investigation, Norwood Police will not release the full incident report at this time. -RD
