NORWOOD – If Norwood residents were hoping for a quick fix to the town’s ongoing aquatics crisis, the Norwood Recreation Department just poured cold water on those expectations.

In a July 1st social media update that reads like a masterclass in bureaucratic damage control, officials announced that Hawes Pool will miss yet another opening window. Despite previous assurances, “mechanical issues” continue to plague the facility. The latest excuse? The malfunctioning equipment is currently under warranty, meaning the town is locked in a slow-moving dance with manufacturers and third-party contractors to get the repairs done “properly.”

While the department claims they are “hopeful” for an opening “sometime next week,” the vague timeline offers little comfort to a community entering a heat wave under the oppressive weight of bureaucratic double speak.

The fallout from this latest delay is expanding rapidly, and local families are taking the hit. The Recreation Department confirmed that all Hawes Pool swim lessons scheduled for next week have been officially canceled. Parents, many of whom fought for coveted slots months ago, are left stranded, waiting on vague email notifications regarding “next steps.”

Meanwhile, the town’s makeshift backup plan is being pushed to its absolute limits, forcing officials to tweak hours and rules as they brace for a crowded, hot holiday week including extended hours.

In anticipation of the heat, the Hawes Splash Pad has extended its daily hours from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM. It remains free to the public, but the town notably glossed over the previously mandated capacity cap of 20 children and the strict age limit of 8 and under. How staff plans to enforce these microscopic limits during a heatwave remains to be seen.

Father Mac’s Pool is also extending its daily hours, operating from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM to absorb the displaced crowds. But remember: if you don’t have a season pool pass, cooling off at Father Mac’s will still cost Norwood residents $10 per person ($20 for non-residents) for an experience that promises to be elbow-to-elbow.

However, on Saturday, July 4, the Splash Pad will shut down early at 3:00 PM, and Father Mac’s Pool will close its gates at 4:00 PM.

The Recreation Department’s latest update acknowledges that this delay is “frustrating, especially with the incoming heat,” stating that they “completely understand.”

But understanding doesn’t fix a broken system. By shifting the blame to warranty protocols and manufacturing timelines, the town is attempting to absolve itself of responsibility. For taxpayers, this raises a glaring question: why are we dealing with critical warranty failures on the eve of July? If this equipment was recently installed or serviced under a warranty contract, the public deserves to know who botched the initial job, and why the town’s oversight allowed it to stall the entire summer season.

Addressing these items now may ensure the pool operates “safely and reliably” in the future, but it does nothing for the kids whose swim lessons were just wiped off the calendar, or the families paying daily admission fees at Father Mac’s just to survive the July heat.

“Sometime next week” has become the town’s favorite refrain. Until that promise materializes into an open gate, Norwood residents are left holding the bill for a summer that is rapidly slipping away. -RD
